For a little Teddy Bear. Free pattern included.

“I have to buy a hat with a teddy bear ears” I remember myself when I was shopping for my little one. Who knows why? Simply because the babies look so cute in this type of hats and beanies.

I made this hat up just yesterday. Honestly. I had something different on my mind. Something more like a beret. But I frogged and changed the idea so many times that I ended up with this hat. And now I am happy to share this pattern with you.

Let´s get started.

Bear Hat with ear flaps free crochet pattern
Size: 38-40 cm/14.9 – 15.7 in (0-2 months)
Yarn: Himalaya Baby Dolphin Chenille Yarn light yellow (80302) and Yarnart Dolce brown (754)

Weight: Super Bulky
Meterage: 100 g (3.53 ounces)/120 m (131 yards) – be careful this one is a little bit thinner than Bernat blanket yarn so the result might vary
Hook size: 6 and 5
Needle with a big eye
Decorative button
Time: at about 2 hours
Suitable for pre-intermediate

US terminology:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
BL DC – back loop double crochet

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 2 CH = Half Double Crochet/Double Crochet and ends with SlSt. With the use of markers you can crochet around without using SlSt.

Yellow (hook 6)
1st row: 10 SC into MC
2nd row: 2 DC into each SC from previous row (20 DC)
3rd row: 2 DC into each DC from previous row (40 DC)
4th – 8th row: 1 DC into each DC from previous row (40 DC)
9th row: BL DC into each DC from previous row (40 BL DC) – it makes a decorative brim
Hook 5
10th row: 1 HDC into each BLDC from previous row (40 HDC)
Brown (hook 5)
11th row: shell pattern. Into every second HDC crochet 1 SC, 1 HDC, 1 SC. Repeat. (20 shells)

Ear flaps
Fold the hat in half. Mark first and sixth brown shell. That is the front of the hat. Start in the seventh shell with a yellow yarn. Insert hook into the space where the sixth brown shell ends. Crochet 4 shells (! 3 HDC into one place). Change the color for brown. Crochet 3 shells (! 3 HDC into one place). Change the color for yellow. Crochet 2 shells (! 3 HDC into one place). Have a look in the picture for the detail. The space in between the last yellow shells is the place you insert yarn to make strings later on.
Now count four brown shells on the hat. That is the back of the hat and start with second flap. In front of the hat there are 6 shells. In the back of the hat there are 4 shells. The rest are the ear flaps.

Ears
Find a place on the hat you wish to have ears. I started in the third row and ended in the fourth row. Start with a SlSt in to DC. Make 5 HDS into DC next to the first one and end with a SlSt in a lower row. Turn. Crochet 2 HDC into each HDC from the previous row. End with a SlSt. Pull the rest of the yarn in the hat. Strings
Cut approximately 80 cm/31.5 in of brown and yellow yarn. Fold in half and pull through the space in between the last two yellow shells. Pull the yarn through a loop. Make a braid.

Embroidering
With a big eye needle and yarn make cross stitches around the hat (in 10th and 11th row).
