Baby hat with ear flaps for beginners

23.8.2017

Today I present an easy pattern for baby hat with ear flaps. I made a video in Czech but if you print out this pattern you can easily follow.

It is a quite quick project and the yarn is sooo yummy that you will continue till every newborn baby has its own hat. Let´s try.

Baby hat with ear flaps for beginners
Size: 35 cm/13.78 in., suitable for a baby size 3.5 – 4 kg
Yarn: Himalaya Baby Dolphin Chenille Yarn white (80301), have a peak zde
Yarn alternatives for overseas are:
– Kartopu Yumurcak
– Universal Yarn Bella Chenille
– Katia Bambi
– King Cole Yumi
– Red Heart Velvety
Weight: Super Bulky
Meterage: 100 g (3.53 ounces)/120 m (135 yards) (! be careful original yarn Himalaya is a little bit thinner than Bernat blanket yarn so the result might vary)
Hook size: 6 mm and 5 mm for brim
Time: at about 2-3 hours

US terminology:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC –  half double crochet
DC – double crochet

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 1 loose CH = Half Double Crochet. You can end with SlSt or crochet around with the help of marker.

White yarn, hook 6 mm
1st row: 9 HDC into MC
2nd row: 2 HDC into each HDC from previous row (18 HDC)
3rd row: crochet scheme 2 HDC – 1 HDC, repeat around the hat, here I did not finished with SlSt and continued crochet around the hat. I made one SC into gap, here insert the marker and continued with HDC into gaps with the following row (27 HDC)
4th row: crochet scheme 2 HDC – 1 HDC – 1 HDC into gaps, repeat around the hat (36 HDC)
5th row: HDC into each gap from the previous row, only double the 18th one (37 HDC)
6th – 11th row: HDC into each gap from the previous row, repeat around the hat, to finish the 11th row I made one SC and SlSt so there is a smooth ending, finish off (37 HDC)

EAR FLAP
Count four gaps from the ending of the 11th row and start from here
1st row: SC, HDC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, HDC, SC, turn
2nd row: start crochet to the HDC from the previous row and crochet SC, HDC, DC, DC, DC, HDC, SC, turn
3rd row: start crochet to the HDC from the previous row and crochet SC, HDC, four DC into one loop, HDC, SC, SlSt
Count 12 loops in the front of the hat and start the second ear flap. You should have 7 to 8th loops at the back altogether.

FINISH
Hook 5, crochet SC around the hat. In the top of the ear flap make two SC in one loop. Here is the place you will insert the strings. A string is made of three threads approximately one meter/over yard long. Check the video for how to make the string. You can decorate your hat with pompoms, applique, bow, flower or just a piece of button.

Congratulation. That it is. Just to make a second one.

Mohla by som sa prosím spýtať, že ako upraviť návod, ak chcem spraviť o veľkosť väčšiu čapičku (2-3 mesiace)? ďakujem 🙂

Hi, I love to make this hat. I have one question.
What exactly do you mean with half double crochets in gaps?
Is it different than to crochet into the stitch? I watched your video but I cannof see it very well.
Hope you can help me, thank you very much in advance.
