UniBella Baby Shoes

9.6.2017

Sometimes I just amaze myself. Positively and also negatively.

One day I was sitting over a small pile of skeins thinking what to crochet. I love baby shoes so I was not hesitating long and started crocheting. Over an hour one small and cute baby shoe was sitting at the fireplace mantel. I took snap picture and post it quicly on the social network. Suprisingly it got so many likes that I decided to share this pattern. I made also a video but with a Czech comments but if you do not mind switching the sound off and just watching following the pattern, it might work also for you.

So let´s try.

UniBella Baby Shoes, size 9-10 cm (for 4-5 kg baby), measurement converter here
Yarn: Alize Bella white 055 and grey 021 (100% cotton, 50g/180m, for US here), pictures zde I used a ball from each collor, if you crochet one-color shoe, one ball is enough. The whole shoe is made of doubled yarn.
Hook: 4 mm a 5 mm
Button (2x)
Time: 2-3 hours

Suitable for pre-intermediate

US terminology

SlSt – slip stitch
CH – chain
SC – single crochet
PDS – half double crochet

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 1 loose CH = Half Double Crochet and ends with SlSt. This not apply if you use markers and crochet in circles. This pattern is written in columns that is the way the shoe is usually crochetted. Also you start with a chain and continue around this chain.

SOLE – grey yarn, doubled, hook 4 mm
Chain of 12

1st row:
HDC into second chain from the hook (that is into tenth from the beginning), you need to have another nine free chains to follow the pattern, watch the video) (here is the heel of the shoe)
8 HDC (one HDC into one CH)
5xHDC (five HDC into the last CH, crochet back around the chain, here is the tip/front of the shoe)
8 HDC (one HDC into one CH)
3xHDC (three HDC into the chain you make the very first HDC)
SlSt (watch video where to make it)

2nd row:
one loose CH as a substitution for the first HDC
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
8 HDC (one HDC into one HDC)
5x2HDC (double each HDC in the tip/front of the shoe)
8 HDC (one HDC into one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
1 HDC in the small gap where is the substitution for the first HDC (watch the video)
SlSt

3rd row:
one loose CH as a substitution for the first HDC
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
8 HDC (one HDC into one HDC)
10x2HDC (double each HDC in the tip/front of the shoe)
10 HDC (one HDC into one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
2xHDC (two in one HDC)
1 HDC in the small gap where is the substitution for the first HDC
SlSt (watch the video)

BODY OF THE SHOE
4th row:
one chain as a substitution for the first SC
SC back loop only around the whole sole
SlSt OR from here you can crochet around the shoe without the SlSt just insert a marker here

White yarn, double, hook 4 mm
5th row:
one chain as a substitution for the first SC
2SCtog
SC around the shoe except six last loops
2SCtog
2SCtog
2SCtog
SlSt/or insert the marker or the piece of yarn and continue to crochet around without the substitution in the following row

6th row:
one loose chain as a substitution for the first HDC
find the middle of the shoe – face the sole of the shoe and try to find the middle stitch, count 12 loops (the middle incl) to the right and 12 loops to the left, insert markers to the loops on the right and on the left side
corchet HDC into HDC to the place where you inserted the marker, from that place
12x2HDCtog
continue with HDC into HDC
SlSt/or crochet around without the substitution in the following row

7th row:
one loose chain as a substitution for the first HDC
crochet HDC to the place where we started making 2HDCtog in the previous row, but
HDC from the previous row and first 2HDCtog from the previous row crochet as 1x2HDCtog, then continue 6x2HDCtog
continue with HDC to HDC
SlSt/or crochet around without the substitution in the following row

8th row:
one loose chain as a substitution for the first HDC
crochet HDC to the place where we started making 2HDCtog in the previous row, but
HDC from the previous row and first 2HDCtog from the previous row crochet as 1x2HDCtog, then continue 3x2HDCtog (make it visaverse with a second shoe)
continue with HDC to HDC, end with SC to HDC and SlSt, finish off the white yarn.

UPPER BRIM AND STRAP
Grey yarn , doubled, hook 4
9th row:
You need to start on the opposite site where you will have the button, find the last 2HDCtog loop, from here count five loops of HDC, here you start with the grey yarn (watch video). Fold the shoe to half, find the half in the heel, insert the marker here. Start crocheting with grey. SC into HDC. Skip one loop before the loop with marker and make 6HDC to the loop with the marker, skip one loop after and continue with SC into HDC to the spot we started. Make SlSt. Continue with a strap.

For a strap
CH 13, SC to the fifth loop from the begining, then make 7 SC and end with a SlSt to the shoe.

LOWER BRIM OF THE SHOE
White yarn, doubled, hook 5
Watch the video or turn the shoe, face the strap part, you can see a thread from the third row around the sole, insert the hook to the loop and make SlSt, go around the whole sole with SlSt.

Finishing
I usually sew the yarn in the shoe without making knots. Sew the button. Make sure it is well sewn.

Congratulation. That it is. Just to make a second one.

In the 9th row, it says to put 6 HDC together in the back of the heel, but in the video it looks like you’re doing double crochets. Which do you recommend? Thanks

I am wanting to make some shoes that are 11.5cm long. Is there a way I can use this pattern but make them longer? I love these shoes!

I usually go up a size in hook, or use thicker yarn. Some booties patterns suggest that, while others give separate instructions, but I find just using a bigger hook and yarn works fine.

Hi, love this pattern! I was wondering: in 3rd row, why do you do 10 HDC, 3 * 2xHDC (two in one HDC) instead of doing 8HDC and 4 * 2xHDC?

    • Reply Krampolinka 3.6.2023 at 8:34

The most important part is to find a middle of the tip and from that place make 2xHDC twice before the middle and 2xHDC twice after the middle of the tip.
