Christmass pixie hat. Free pattern

I designed this x-mass hat during hot summer day. I had several copies on pieces of paper around the house. Finally today is the Day I am going to share it with you.

We have couple days left to Christmas and this is a super easy and fast project for anyone. This free pattern is available in two different baby sizes (preemie – 2 months) but if you read useful tips you can make whatever size you need. So let´s start:

Fast X-mass Pixie hat by Krampolinka
Yarn: Himalaya Baby Dolphin Chenille Yarn green (80331), white (80301) and red (80316)
Pompom: Eyelash yarn, e.g. Alize Decofur, Kartopu Yumos to make a crochet pompom (Tutorial here) and decorative brim. You can also make a pompom in a traditional way or you can buy one.
Stuffing/filling for your crochet pompom.
Yarn alternatives for overseas are:

Weight: Super Bulky
Meterage: 100 g (3.53 ounces)/120 m (135 yards) (! be careful original yarn Himalaya is a little bit thinner than Bernat blanket yarn so the result might vary)
Hook size: 6 (I crochet pretty tight so you may need smaller hooks)
Needle and thread
Decorative button or decorative label
Time: at about 2-3 hours
Suitable for beginners

US terminology:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet
FP DC – front post double crochet
BP DC – back post double crochet
Brim: each row starts with 2 CH = Double Crochet. Hat: each row starts with 3 CH = double crochet and ends with SlSt.

Size: 34-36 cm/13.3 – 14.1 in., preemie – 1 month
Brim – red color.

1st row: 6 CH, turn
2nd row: DC into each CH loop (6DC), turn
3rd row: FP DC (6 FPDC)
4th row: BP DC (6 FPDC)
5th – 18th: repeat one row of FP DC and the other row BC DC
19th row: with a SlSt joint the opposite end and make a circle

Body of hat is crocheted to the brim.
Switch three colors. (I made green, white and red combination)

1st row: 36 DC (2 DC into each “gap” in the brim)
2nd row: 5th and 6th DC together (30 DC)
3rd row: 5th and 6th DC together (25 DC)
4th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (25 DC)
5th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (25 DC)
6th row: 5th and 6th DC together (21 DC)
7th row: 5th and 6th DC together (17 DC)
8th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (17 DC)
9th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (17 DC)
10th row: 4th and 5th together (13 DC)
11th row: 5th and 6th DC together (11 DC)
12th row: 4th and 5th together (9 DC)
13th – 20th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (9 DC)
21th row: 4th and 5th together (8 DC)
22th – 24th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (8 DC)
25th row: 4th and 5th together (7 DC)
26th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (7 DC)
27th row: 1st and 2nd together (4 DC)
28th row: 1st and 2nd together. End. Sew the button and the pompom.

 

Size: 36-38 cm/14.1 – 14.9 in., 1 – 2 months
Brim – red color.

1st row: 6 CH, turn
2nd row: DC into each CH loop (6DC), turn
3rd row: FP DC (6 FPDC)
4th row: BP DC (6 FPDC)
5th – 19th: repeat one row of FP DC and the other row BC DC

6th row: 5th and 6th DC together (25 DC)
7th row: 5th and 6th DC together (21 DC)
8th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (21 DC)
9th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (21 DC)
10th row: 4th and 5th together (17 DC)
11th row: 5th and 6th DC together (15 DC)
12th row: 5th and 6th together (13 DC)
13th – 15th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (13 DC)
16th row: 4th and 5th together (11 DC)
17th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (11 DC)
18th row: 4th and 5th together (9 DC)
19th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (9 DC)
20th row: 4th and 5th together (7 DC)
21st – 26th row: DC into each DC from the previous row (7 DC)
27th row: 1st and 2nd together (4 DC)
28th row: 1st and 2nd together. End. Sew the button and the pompom.

 

Useful tips:

• you can crochet in circles but to avoid a visible color changing I started with a chain of three as a substitution of the first DC and started with a new color with a start of a new row. Just pull tight and it stays in a row. That is an advantage of this type of yarn. It does not work with other types.
• you can decorate the brim with an eyelash type of yarn but also this fluffy type works well for me.
• you can customize the size of the hat easily. Just make the brim according to the hat circumference. The body of the hat starts either with 2 DC and 1 DC scheme into brim “gaps” or 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC scheme into brim “gaps”. In every third row make 5th and 6th DC together. It also works well.
