Crochet pompom

31.10.2016

Pompoms are very popular these days. Actually they are everywhere.

On hats, on scarfs, on neck warmers, on mittens, on toys. They are enhancing the look of handmade products and they are so sweet. We have different types of pompoms. Small, big, fluffy, heart-shape, made of fur and so one. They are usually made with a help of a pompom maker. We can also find some pompoms sewn from a piece of fur cloth. But today I would like to introduce you a crochet pompom. The one in the pictures are made of:

But as these are different types of eyelash yarns, I made a little bit of research for you from overseas and found this one:

POMPOM PATTERN:
To make a crochet pompom we need

  • one ball/skein of eyelash yarn
  • hook 6 or 5,5 or 5
  • textile hollow fiber (to stuff the pompom)

For beginners (but you need to use your sense of touch and patience)

These are US terms:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
tog – together

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 2 CH = Half Double Crochet/Double Crochet and ends with SlSt.

Eyelash yarn with a long fur. Size at about 10 cm/3.9 in, hook 5.5 or 6
1st row: 6 DC into MC, SlSt
2nd row: 2 DC into each DC from previous row, SlSt (12 DC)
3rd row: 2 DC into each DC from previous row, SlSt (24 DC)
4th row: DC into each DC from previous row, SlSt (24 DC)
5th row till the end: 2 DCtog as one HDC repeat without SlSt around till there is no hole. End the yarn. Pull through the free end of yarn from MC, make a knot.

  • I do not put any textile hollow fiber into this type of pompom
  • When I sew this pompom to the hat, I go first through the two free ends of yarn (above the knot), to make sure the knot does not untie
  • It is a matter of sense of touch to crochet from this yarn. Go slow when it tangles it is usually not easy to untangle it and you need to start over again
  • If you skip a loop or chain, the long eyelashes will mask it
  • Count the chains/loop as much as possible

Eyelash yarn with a “normal” fur. Size at about 8-10 cm/3.15-3.9 in, hook 5.5 or 5 (even smaller when the textile hollow fiber goes through)
1st row: 6 HDC into MC
2nd row: 2 HDC into each HDC from previous row, SlSt (12 HDC)
3rd row: 2 HDC into each HDC from previous row, SlSt (24 HDC)
4th – 5th row: HDC into each HDC from previous row, SlSt (24 HDC)
6th row till the end: 2 HDCtog as one SC repeat without SlSt around till there is a small hole. Stuff the pompom with textile hollow fiber and continue till the moment there is no hole. End the yarn. Pull through the free end of yarn from MC, make a knot.

  • When I sew this pompom to the hat,  I go first through the two free ends of yarn (above the knot), to make sure the knot does not untie
  • It is a matter of sense of touch to crochet from this yarn. Go slow when it tangles it is usually not easy to untangle it and you need to start over again
  • You need to count the loops with this type of yarn. If you skip a lot, textile hollow fiber goes through.
  • If the textile hollow fiber still goes through, take a smaller size of hook and repeat the 4th and 5th row 2-3 times

Of course you can adapt the size of the pompom according to your project (smaller/bigger).
