Grey baby beanie with ribbon

When I was cleaning up the house after the Christmas, I found several pieces of ribbon and lace. A new design popped up in my mind immediately: “What would it look like if combined with bulky yarn in baby set?”

So I put aside all the cleaning gear and started to crochet. Grey-white beanie with ears and with some Nordic spots and a red-white beanie with lace and ribbon. And of course, there is a free pattern for you.

Size: 36 cm/14 in (0-1 months)
Yarn: Himalaya Baby Dolphin Chenille Yarn white (80301) and light grey (80325), pictures here

Weight: Super Bulky
Meterage: 100 g (3.53 ounces)/120 m (135 yards) (! be careful original yarn Himalaya is a little bit thinner than Bernat blanket yarn so the result might vary)
Hook size: 6mm/J or 10 (I crochet pretty tight so you may need smaller hooks)
Decorative ribbon 50 cm/0.54 yard
Needle and thread
Decorative button 2 pieces
Time: at about 2 hours

Suitable for pre-intermediate

US terminology:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
FP HDC – front post half double crochet
BP HDC – back post half double crochet

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 2 CH = Half Double Crochet and ends with SlSt. With the use of markers you can crochet around without using SlSt.

White (hook 6) STARTING WITH A BRIM
1st row: 7 CH, turn
2nd row: insert the hook into 5th stitch from the beginning and make HDC (what has left is the substitution for the first HDC), then crochet HDC into each loop four times (6HDC), turn
3rd row: FP HDC only (6)
4th row: BP HDC only (6)
5th – 31st row: repeat one row FP HDC and the other row BP HDC (6)
32nd row: use SlSt to join the other end to make a circle brim

White (hook 6) THE HAT BODY
1st row: crochet scheme 1 SC, 1 SC, 1 SC, 2 SC inserting the hook into the gaps of the brim. Make 2 SC in the last one. You should have 39 SC altogether

White and grey (hook 6)
2nd row: the main yarn is the white one and you lead the grey behind the work. Each third SC is made with grey yarn. TIP: insert the hook in the loop, pull the grey and leave it on the hook, finish the stitch with white yarn. It makes a small heart-shape stitch similar to knitting stitch. MAKE THE FIRST STITCH WITH GREY and from now every third one is grey. (39 SC)
3rd row: crochet with white as the main yarn, lead grey behind the work. Each third SC is made with grey yarn, starting from the SECOND stitch (39 SC)
4th row: crochet with white as the main yarn, lead grey behind the work. Each third SC is made with grey yarn, starting from the THIRD stitch (39 SC)

White (hook 6)
5th – 11th row: SC into SC from the previous row (39 SC)
12th row: turn the hat inside and join the both sites with SlSt (you end up with a square hat), end yarn

Grey (hook 6)
Make 39 SC around the brim of the hat.

EARS
Take needle and white double thread. At about 2 cm/0.7 in from the tip of the hat corner sew the hat through turn at the end and sew back to the point you have started (with sewing and two edges it looks like a triangle). Then slightly pull the thread and make a knot. You should end up with an ear. Apply this to the second ear.

FINISH
Make a bow from the ribbon (twice) and secure it with a button. Sew it to the ear. You can find how to make a bow in a gallery here.
