Cozy home slippers. Free pattern

23.12.2016

I started crocheting baby booties from the chenille yarn this August. I designed them and I was literally flooded with orders. But I was really curious what it is like wearing them.

I had a pattern on my mind for a while but just before Christmas I had finally time for a crocheting experiment. And there it is. One pair of home slippers with a strap and one with a bow. Which one do you prefer?

Before you follow this pattern please read USEFUL TIPS. They can help you to speed up your work. Plus I would like to hear from you and keep you updated if there are any problems with the pattern. It is sometimes hard for the designer to find all the problematic part of the pattern and from my perspective to follow a written pattern for booties is the hardest one.

USEFUL TIPS

  • make dots on the sole with a glue gun so the shoes will not be so slippery on the floor
  • you will need three sizes of the hooks, one for the shoe, one for the sole brim and one for the top shoe border
  • shoe size is EU 39-40/US 8.5-9. To make it bigger you can add more chains in the first row, or you can crochet with a bigger hook, or you can substitute all HDC with DC. To make it smaller, you can crochet with a smaller hook or you can substitute DC with HDC
  • it is better to make both shoes and then crochet the bows so you will not be stressed with the yarn consumption
  • these shoes are not crocheted symmetrically, so do not be stressed with the irregularity of the pattern
  • you need to count a lot so you might need a quiet room. Slip stitch is made into the chain (substitution) of the same row. Marker inserted in a particular place (follow the pattern) will help a lot
  • great advantage of chenille yarn is that it hides some mistakes
  • it takes at about 1-1.5 hour to crochet one shoe at the beginning but you will speed up with the second one. Please crochet both shoes in one day so you can avoid the irregularity with tightening the yarn (shoe will be smaller/bigger)
  • if you can see big gaps in the place where you crochet DC together, chain the hook for SMALLER one and try to tighten the stitches
  • make coffee and prepare something tasty because when the slippers are ready you really need to award yourself 🙂

Good luck

US terminology:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – double crochet
Tog – together

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 2 CH = Half Double Crochet/Double Crochet and ends with SlSt.

FIRST SHOE, sole, hook 5
1st row: CH 22

TIP 1: Where to crochet the first HDC? Count from the other end! You know that there will be 7DC in the tip of the shoe. So from this place count the stitches and you will get exactly the last one whre to make the first HDC.

2nd row: HDC in the second loop from the hook (first substitution for the HDC are the first two skipped CH), then crochet: HDC, HDC (2), SC, SC, SC, SC, SC, SC, SC (7), HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC (4), DC, DC, DC, DC (4), 7 DC in the last loop and continue on the opposite site DC, DC, DC, DC (4), HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC (4), SC, SC, SC, SC, SC, SC, SC (7), HDC, HDC (2), 2 HDC in the last loop/gap, SlSt (45 altogether)

TIP 2: Find the first DC from 7 DC you crochet in the last loop and insert the marker here.

TIP 3: Not sure where to insert the SlSt? We will double the first DC, the one with the marker, so this is a key point you can count the stitches in the third row and you get exactly the place where to make the SlSt and end the second row.

3rd row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC) and HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop (4x), HDC, HDC, HDC (3), SC, SC, SC, SC, SC (5), HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC (4), DC, DC, DC (3), 2 DC in the place with the marker and place the marker to the first DC you made, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop (7x), continue on the opposite site with DC, DC, DC (3),HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC (4), SC, SC, SC, SC, SC (5), HDC, HDC, HDC (3), 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop (4x), SlSt (60 altogether)

TIP 4: Did you replace the marker? We will double the one with the marker so if you are not sure with SlSt you can again easily count and find the right place.

4th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC) and HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop (6x),  HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC (5), DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC (12x), 2 DC in the loop with the marker and place the marker to the first DC you made, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop, 2 DC in the same loop (14x), DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC, DC (12x), HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC (5), HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop, 2 HDC in the same loop (6x), SlSt (86 altogether)

TIP 5: Did you replace the marker? We will crochet first HDC to this place so if you are not sure with SlSt you can again easily count and find the right place.

5th row – the body of the shoe. CROCHET IN THE BACK LOOP ONLY. (the one which is farther) APPLY ONLY TO THIS ROW. 1 CH (substitution for the first SC), 28 SC, 28 HDC (the first one goes to the place with the marker and insert the marker to the first HDC you made), 29 SC, SlSt (86 altogether)

6th row: 1 CH (substitution for the first SC), 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (4x), 21 SC, BE AWARE! the last SC goes to the place with the marker. 2 DCTog and HERE place the marker, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog,  2 DCTog,  2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog (12 x), 23 SC, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (4x), 1 SC, SlSt (66 altogether)

TIP 6: As you can see the tip of the shoe is not crocheted regularly and that is OK, we are shaping the shoe this way

7th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC), 10 HDC, 11 SC, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (2x), 2 DCTog (HERE place the marker), 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog (6x), 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (2x), 14 SC, 10 HDC, SlSt (56 altogether)

TIP 7: If you can see big gaps in the place where the DC/SC are crocheted together either tighten the stitches or frog and change for even smaller hook.

8th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC), 9 HDC, 12 SC, 2 SCTog, 2 DCTog (HERE place the marker), 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog (3x), 2 SCTog, 14 SC, 10 HDC, SlSt (51 altogether)

9th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC), 16 HDC, 5 SC, 2 SCTog (you are crocheting a loop with a marker with the preceeding loop), 1 HDC, 2 SCTog, 7 SC, 17 HDC, SlSt (49 altogether)

If you get here you have my respect and admiration. You finished your first shoe. Have something sweet, rest a little bit and let´s continue.

SECOND SHOE, SOLE, hook 5
Repeat the above pattern from the 1st to 5th row. Do not forget to place the marker in the loop.

6th row: 1 CH (substitution for the first SC), 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (4x), 23 SC, BE AWARE! the last SC goes to the second loop from the marker, that is the third HDC from the previous row,  2 DCTog and HERE place the marker, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog,  2 DCTog,  2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog (12 x), 21 SC, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (4x), 1 SC, SlSt (66 altogether)

7th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC), 9 HDC, 14 SC, 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (2x), 2 DCTog (HERE place the marker), 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog (6x), 2 SCTog, 2 SCTog (2x), 12 SC, 10 HDC, SlSt (56 altogether)

8th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC), 9 HDC, 14 SC, 2 SCTog, 2 DCTog (HERE place the marker), 2 DCTog, 2 DCTog (3x), 2 SCTog, 12 SC, 10 HDC, SlSt (51 altogether)

9th row: 2 CH (substitution for the first HDC), 16 HDC, 7 SC, 2 SCTog (you are crocheting a loop with a marker with the preceeding loop), 1 HDC, 2 SCTog, 5 SC, 17 HDC, SlSt (49 altogether)

Congratulation. You rock! Now you have the second shoe. Now it depends what you prefer – stripe or bow?

Bottom edge of the shoe, hook 6
Turn the shoe so you face the bottom sole. You can see the edge of the shoe (remember when we crochet the back-loop-row?). Take the contrasting color, insert the hook in the edge stitch and with SlSt go around the whole sole. When you turn your shoe you can see backstitching with two colors.

Upper edge of the shoe, hook 4
With SC go around the upper edge of the shoe (row 10th)

TIP 8: Start making upper edge of the shoe where the heel is. This applies to the shoe with a bow. Start making upper edge of the shoe AFTER you make the stripe. This applies to the shoe with a stripe.

STRIPE, hook 5
Find the last SlSt. From here count 22 loops and from inside the shoe start crocheting the stripe

1st row: 3 CH, DC, HDC, SC, turn and crochet back
2nd – 7th row: 4 SC, turn, crochet back
8th row: 4 DC, turn, crochet back
9th row: 4 DC, finish off

TIP 9: The last two row of DC are the button holes.

You can decorate the stripe with embroidered stars. I embroidered crosses first and then I made the middle part of the start with a front stitch.

BOW
8 CH. Count 5th loop from the beginning. Insert hook and make HDC (the rest on the hook is the substitution for the HDC), than crochet 4 HDC. Turn. Crochet 7 rows with 6 HDC in each row. You get a rectangle. Take a contrasting yarn and wind it in the middle of the rectangle and you get the bow.
