Baby beanie with a random Nordic pattern.

7.1.2017

Him: “Why don´t you crochet? We are driving on the straight road.”
Me: “I am thinking right now.”
Him: “Well you can think on mountain roads.”

We were driving to a spa resort for a short vacation. Whenever my partner drives, I crochet. And I love straight highways. Mountain roads are a different story. I feel quite dizzy but this time I waited for them. I put aside the hook and tried to picture this hat in my mind. I could see it clearly. As soon as I could which was hard with a baby and some crochet orders to fulfill that night, I finally had time to sit and crochet this new baby hat. I quickly wrote a pattern in order not to forget it and with a wave of nostalgia I named it a Spa baby beanie.

USEFUL TIPS

  • The pattern will not work with a Bernat blanket yarn (it is thicker!)
  • The part with the Nordic pattern is tighter than the other part. Please crochet loosely.
  • If it is too tight to go through both loops when crocheting the pattern you can do only front loop crochet, it does not do any harm to the pattern
  • “V” shape of the stitch: I did not finish a simple crochet stitch with brown yarn. I did only half and when having too loops on the hook I finished the simple crochet with creamy yarn.
  • This hat is crocheted from the top to brim.

So let´s try.

Spa Baby beannie  with a Norwegian pattern

Hook size: 6/J/10 (I crochet pretty tight so you may need smaller hooks)
Pompom (2x) You can crochet a pompom from an eyelash yarn, tutorial here or you can buy one
Needle and thread
Decorative button or decorative tag
Time: at about 2 hours

Suitable for pre-intermediate

US terminology:
MC – Magic Circle
Sl St – slip stitch
CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
FP HDC – front post half double crochet
BP HDC – back post half double crochet

Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 2 CH = Half Double Crochet and ends with SlSt. I do not mention it in the pattern.

Creamy (hook 6/J/10)
1st row: 9 SC into MC
2nd row: 2 SC into each SC from previous row (18 SC)
3rd row: crochet scheme 2 SC and 1 SC, repeat around the hat (27 SC)

Now add brown yarn and lead it behind the work. TIP: When you insert the hook in the loop, add also the brown yarn and crochet around this (look in the gallery I took picture of the inside part of the hat). You avoid to have a loosen strings inside the hat. In the fourth row crochet each 8th stitch with brown yarn.
4th row: crochet scheme 2 SC, 1 SC, 1 SC, repeat around the hat (36 SC)

In the fifth row crochet each 7th stitch with brown yarn and start from the third SC.
5th row: crochet scheme 2 SC, 1 SC, 1 SC, 1 SC repeat around the hat (45 SC)

In the sixth row crochet each 6th stitch with brown yarn and start from the first SC.
6th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat – count if you accidentally did not add more stitches

In the seventh row crochet each 5th stitch with brown yarn.
7th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

In the eighth row crochet each 4th stitch with brown yarn and start from the second SC.
8th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat – count the stitches just in case 🙂

In the ninth row crochet each 3rd stitch with brown yarn.
9th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

CAREFULhere you change the yarn. Your main yarn is brown from now on and the creamy goes behind the work
In the tenth row crochet each 3rd stitch with creamy yarn.
10th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

In the eleventh row crochet each 4th stitch with creamy yarn.
11th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

In the twelfth row crochet each 8th stitch with creamy yarn and start from the second SC.
12th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

In the thirteen row crochet each 9th stitch with creamy yarn and start from the fourth SC.
13th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

In the fourteenth row crochet each 10th stitch with creamy yarn
14th row: crochet 45 SC around the hat

CAREFUL since now on use only brown yarn
15th – 16th row: BP HDC and FP HDC but decrease one stitch (44)

POMPOM (2x)
If you decide to crochet your own pompoms:
1st row: 8 HDC into magic circle
2nd row: 2 HDC into each HDC from the previous row (16 HDC)
3rd – 4th row: HDC into each HDC from the previous row (16 HDC)
5th row – 2HDC together. Fill your pompom with stuffing and continue decreasing stitches.

Finish
If you decided to buy pompoms, sew them to the hat and sew the decorative button or decorative tag.
