Garden party was calling and my little one did not have any hat for this festive occasion.
With a very limited time I had to make “something” to meet my expectation: sun protection and breathable. So I made this simple baby hat suitable for any beginners. The original piece is made of a Czech Yarn VlnaHep Perla (60%bamboo/40%cotton). This yarn is certified for kids under three years of age, very soft, has a natural look and it is nice to work with. It is sold in 50 g skeins and has 125 metres. If you pick similar yarn (50g/125 m OR 100g/250 m) and 4 mm hook, you should end up with the same size. Otherwise you need to alternate the pattern a little bit. Even if the video is not in English, please watch tricky parts for smooth work. So let´s start!
Baby Summer Hat, size 45-46 cm
Yarn: VlnaHep Perla, one skein of each color, sample colors here
Hook: 4 mm hat, 2 mm brim
Button, tag or crochet flower appliqué for decoration

CH – chain stitch
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
Each row starts with either 1 CH = Single Crochet or 2 CH = Half Double Crochet/double crochet and ends with SlSt.
Perla, hook 4 mm, size 45-46 cm, color 1
1st row: 10 HDC do MC, SlSt
2nd row: double each HDC, that is 20 PDS, SlSt
3rd row: crochet scheme 2 HDC-1 HDC, that is 30, SlSt
4th row: crochet scheme 2 HDC-1 HDC-1HDC, that is 40, SlSt
5th row: substitution for 1 SC = 1 CH, then 3 CH, 1 SC in following loop, skip one (or two) loop, repeat (the pattern repeats on the three loops this way), SlSt. We need 12 columns/16 rows of the pattern. In this case we need to skip 2 loops three times in this row.
6th row: under 3CH from the previous row make SC – 2 CH – SC, repeat three times, in between the columns make 3CH, repeat, SlSt
7th row: make SlSt to get to the middle of the middle arc from the previous row, under this arc make SC – 3 CH – SC, in between the columns make 4 CH, repeat, SlSt
8th row: under 3CH from the previous row make SC – 3 CH – SC, repeat three times, in between the columns make 4 CH, repeat, SlSt
9th row: make SlSt to get to the middle of the middle arc from the previous row, under this arc make SC – 3 CH – SC, in between the columns make 4 CH, repeat, SlSt
10th row: same as 8th
11th row: same as 9th
12th row: same as 8th
13th row: same as 9th
14th row: same as 8th
15th row: same as 9th
16th row: same as 8th
17th row: leveling the brim, make 3 HDC under 4 CH, and one SC in each small arc (72 loops)

18th row: SC around the hat (72)
Color 1
19th row: SC around the hat (72)
HAT BRIM, hook 2 mm, color 1
20th row: crochet scheme 2 SC – 1 SC, SlSt
21st row: SC around the hat, SlSt
22nd row: for wavy brim crochet scheme 2 SC – 1 SC – 1 SC, for less wavy brim crochet scheme 2 SC – 1 SC, SlSt
23rd row: HDC around the hat, SlSt
24th – 25th row: HDC in the gaps, SlSt
Color 2
26th row: shells made of 4 HDC, skip loop, SC, skip loop, repeat, SlSt
Finish
Sew in the free ends, decorate with a button or crochet flower or a tag.
